Oil Cleansing?

Do you find yourself searching for the perfect facial products? You can waste a lot of money buying make-up remover wipes, cleansers, toners, firming gels, moisturizers, etc. Another issue is that our skin care need’s evolve as we age. What worked for you at 17, likely is not working for you now. Hormones, dehydration, sun exposure, and the environment all take their toll on our skin.

What if you have thought about this all wrong? Have you ever had something oily on your hands and then ran water over your skin? Oil repels water. In order to cleanse your skin, most facial cleansers work by stripping off your natural, healthy oils, then breaking down oils in your makeup products. Only then is your cleanser able to do it’s job, remove dirt and dead skin. The harsher the product, the more healthy oils you are stripping from your beautiful face. Traditional cleansers can irritate the skin, cause excessive dryness, exacerbate acne, and ultimately result in the skin overproducing oil after washing. Oil cleansing, on the other hand, can help balance the skin and lock in hydration. Oils used for cleansing may also have healing properties, important nutrients, or other skin-boosting benefits.

While there’s currently little research on oil cleansing, a small 2010 study found that cleansing oil was good for dry, mature skin.

More currently, another small study found that adults and children who used a bath oil every other day for a month had better skin barrier function and fewer symptoms of dry skin than those who used oil-free cleansers.

The key to having the healthiest skin is to have moisture, first from within. Body cells fully hydrated are plumper and help mask fine lines and wrinkles. The key is to try and drink at least 64oz of water daily. The second important component is moisture form outside.

What if you took everything you thought you knew about skin care and flipped it upside down? Why not try oil cleansing? The concept is simple, but for acne prone skin like mine that can be scary. So last year while under stay at home orders from our governor during the pandemic, I took the leap. I created a facial scrub and began my journey. Now my skin is happy, healthy, and looking it’s best.
